Principle Scientist - Thermosets-PLY00433

Position Purpose & Summary

Provide technical leadership and hands on approach in the lab R&D, QC, production and in the applications field.  Create new products/customer solutions in lab and scale them up to full production quantities, as well as solving production problems of current products.  Responsible for toll and piloting efforts as well.  Additionally provide advice and education to sales/marketing on technical matters to assist in the creation of new opportunities for CIS’s growth through the invention of new technologies and the development of new product lines based on these novel concepts.

Principal Accountabilities

65%  CIS Technical Team 

  • Support the development of new products/technologies to meet the commercial product requirements as defined by category team leads.
  • Recommend technical strategies to meet commercial product needs.
  • To include but not limited to CIS Formulating for Urethanes, especially formulations relating to flexible & rigid foams and coatings/elastomer.
  • Support CIS’s defined growth areas by working with the technical staff as a technical resource.
  • Work with customers and prospective customer to provide the technical expertise to convert formulas to end use products
  • Experimental to Commercialization support.
  • Provide world-class technical support to external customers for both product introduction and trouble-shooting.

25%  Tracking Performance using systems, data management and analysis

  • Project Management- Take an active role in developing proactive safety initiatives, programs and training to promote safety awareness for laboratory, pilot, and customer activities. 
  • Support environmental awareness and adherence to all regulations and standards.
  • Other systems as needed.

10%  Commercial

  • Sales and Marketing Support
  • Provide world-class technical support to external customers for both product introduction and trouble-shooting.
  • Contribute to the profitable growth of Cargill Industrial Specialties by identifying customer/industry needs.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Chemistry or a related technical field (i.e. science or engineering)
  • 8+ years plus experience in polyurethanes & related thermosets
  • 8+ years of laboratory experience in formulation and Product development
  • 5+ years of interfacing with customers in multiple markets
  • Understanding of industrial processes, strategy development and results
  • Implementation of new technology solutions (modernize the way we work)
  • Excellent communication skills – both one-to-one and as a facilitator of medium/large groups
  • Outstanding process and results orientation with demonstrated success working through others in multi-cultural environment
  • Delivering results (ability to determine key drivers for success and put the right measures in place)
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and deal effectively in technically complex situations
  • Adept at operating in the intersections of facility operations, information technology, and external marketplace realities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or Masters in Chemistry or a related technical field (i.e. science or engineering)
  • 10+ years plus experience in polyurethanes & related thermosets, leading teams
  • 10+ years of interfacing with customers in multiple markets
  • 10+ years of laboratory experience in formulation and Product development
  • Advanced expertise in a core technology/enabling science
  • Leads highly complex projects
  • May direct the work of others through projects and/or provide oversight/coaching for a small group of professionals
  • Mechanical ability relevant to scientific equipment and application testing in the lab
  • Ability to use insight gained on multiple unrelated projects/problems
  • Ability to find economical as well as technical solutions to customer problems

The Electronic Materials Technology team is looking for an experienced product development scientist or engineer. The candidate should have leadership experience, a polymer science background, a track record of commercializing new products, and excellent customer engagement skills. Experience is desired in the field of potting and encapsulation products, automotive electronics, LEOs, electric/hybrid vehicles, or power electronics.

The Electronic Materials Technology team is responsible for new product development and technical service of existing potting and encapsulant products across the globe. The team is comprised of chemists, material scientists and chemical engineers.

Candidates should be comfortable leading multiple new product development projects. The position would entail conducting lab experiments, supervising the work of others, project planning, running customer trials, supervising some scale up manufacturing batches , and communicating project progress. The candidate should have experience interfacing directly with external customers and chemical manufacturing plants.

The in cum bent is expected to maintain a standard of technical awareness, particularly in areas of expertise, and act as an in-house consultant in technical areas beyond direct responsibility as needed. This position requires the handling of chemicals and strong chemical and safety awareness. The incumbent will need to adhere to the company's ISO 9001quality, safety, and ethical business practices policies. The incumbent will be called upon to train and mentor other laboratory personnel. The position may require approximately 20% travel in the US and internationally.

Mandatory Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.3 GPAin chemistry, polymer science, chemical engineering, material science or a related field.
• 5+ years of industrial experience in the area of polymeric pottants, encapsulants, silicones, urethanes, or thermally conductive materials.
• 5+ years experience in developing new sales and customers
• A track record and desire to work in a laboratory environment.
• Experience leading medium to large product development projects or customer trials.
• •A track record of launching new polymeric material products.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate with others even in challenging situations, including internal & external customers and teams.
• Prior published articles and/or patents.
• Awareness of chemical laboratory safety procedures.

Non-Mandatory Qualifications:
•Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in related field.
• Experience in the fields of automotive electronics, LEOs, electrical/hybrid vehicles, or power electronics.
