TRFA Announces Keynote

Glen Ellyn, IL—When the Thermoset Resin Formulators Association calls its annual meeting to order on Monday, September 30th at the Hyatt Regency Newport in Newport, Rhode Island, Dr. Dean Webster will present the Keynote Address, "Improving the Sustainability of Thermosets Using Renewables" from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m.

Dr. Dean Webster is Professor and Chair in the Department of Coatings and Polymeric Materials at North Dakota State University. He received a B.S. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Materials Engineering Science from Virginia Tech.  Prior to joining NDSU in 2001, he worked for Sherwin-Williams at their Central Research Laboratories in Chicago and at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, Tennessee.  He is the editor-in-chief of Progress in Organic Coatings and recipient of the 2011 Roy W. Tess Award in Coatings Science given by the American Chemical Society and the 2013 Joesph Mattiello Lecture award given by the American Coatings Association.

As an approach to improved sustainability, interest in the use of “green” or renewable chemicals in the synthesis of materials such as polymers and thermosets continues to grow at a rapid pace. One major source of renewable chemicals is agricultural products and significant research efforts are now being expended to identify methods for transforming biomass into useful chemical building blocks. Several monomers derived from cellulose, such as succinic acid, levulinic acid, isosorbide, and furandicarboxylic acid are being commercialized. The reaction of isosorbide with epichlorohydrin leads to an epoxy that can be crosslinked with amines similar to conventional epoxy resins. While seed oils and their functionalized derivatives have been used for decades in a number of applications, new research has resulted in the identification of additional ways to exploit the use of oils in polymers.

The TRFA 2013 Annual Meeting also features 12 Technical Papers focused on the latest products and advanced techniques. A Regulatory Affairs update, Global Market update, and the presentation by the Annual Excellence in Thermoset Polymer Research Award winner will keep you abreast of the latest research and regulations. Attendees may also take advantage of the Additives 101 Short Course for training new employees or as a refresher for experienced personnel. TRFA Announces 2012 Winner of Excellence in Thermoset Polymer Research Award

Glen Ellyn, IL—The Thermoset Resin Formulators Association (TRFA) has announced that Mohamed Baqar, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, is the winner of the 3rd Annual Excellence in Thermoset Polymer Research Award.  His paper, "Methylol-Functional Benzoxazines: Novel Precursors for Phenolic Thermoset Polymers,” will be presented at the TRFA 2012 Annual Meeting, October 28-30 at Loews Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Mr. Baqar’s study represents a pioneer class of high performance benzoxazine resin by incorporating methlol group into benzoxazine structure. The presence of methylol groups exhibits an additional condensation reaction along with the polymerizationof polybenzoxazine. In addition, these groups play a significant role in accelerating polymerization which improved the thermal properties of the produced polymer.

Because the competition for the Excellence in Thermoset Polymer Research Award was especially close this year, TRFA is also awarding a second place prize to Brendan McDonald of the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario, for his paper "Biomimetic Micro-Structured Surfaces: Pattern Transfer and Fabrication of Icephobic Epoxy Surfaces.”

Mr. McDonald’s paper will also be presented at the 2012 TRFA Annual Meeting. The paper considers how utilizing a two-stage pattern transfer process, a superhydrophobic surface was generated with an epoxy material possessing a micro-patterned array of pillars where subsequent characterization has observed several properties that indicate a potential effectiveness as a robust icephobic surface coating. In contrast to much recent work, the use of an epoxy material to generate superhydrophobic surfaces is rare compared to the more common use of PDMS or polyurethane composites within adhesion or coating applications. This work addresses several practical issues related to the icing of surfaces within an outdoor environment, including both ice-adhesion and the hydrophobic characteristics within a variable temperature environment.

TRFA has also announced four Honorable Mention Awards. They are:

In 2010, TRFA initiated the award for student researchersto encourage and recognize advances in the science & engineering of thermosetting polymers.  In addition, the association believes the award can provide the recipient with visibility and exposure in the industry. The award for each winner includes: a cash award and an award plaque that will presented at the TRFA 2012 Annual Meeting; complimentary registration for the Annual Meeting; two-night complimentary accommodations at Loews Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, Florida; travel allowance of up to $500 for one person; and the opportunity to present their paper at the Annual Meeting. Winning papers are also posted on the TRFA website and will be included on the CD of conference proceedings which will be presented to all meeting attendees. The TRFA Academic Panel judging the 11 submissions was chaired by Dr. Pritesh Patel of Air Products & Chemicals. Eligible students must be BS, MS, or PhD candidates at an accredited college/university (in USA + Canada).

In addition to the research award, TRFA invites students to present posters showcasing research work in the field of composites, coatings, adhesives, molding or related thermosetting polymer technologies. TRFA Webinar: Basic Surface Chemistry and Surfactants for Polymer Systems

Glen Ellyn, IL—The Thermoset Resin Manufacturers Association (TRFA) invites industry professionals to attend its upcoming webinar on Basic Surface Chemistry and Surfactants for Polymer Systems, presented by Dr. Charles Hegedus, Air Products & Chemicals, Inc. The industry education event is scheduled for Wednesday, December 7, 2011, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon EST.

Sponsored by the TRFA Adhesives and Sealants Committee, the webinar will discuss principles of surface chemistry and wetting, as well as surfactant additives which can be used to improve wetting and prevent defects. There are many interfaces and a variety of large surface areas within formulated polymer systems, which include the actual material-air surface and also internal polymer-filler and/or fiber interfaces. These interfaces are controlled by surface chemistry principles which are even more critical and complicated in waterborne polymer systems due to the inherently high surface tension of water. They also are challenging with low surface energy polymers. Poor surface wetting and foam generation during manufacturing and/or processing can cause production difficulties as well as defects in the final material, which in turn can cause material failure. These difficulties can be overcome with the proper selection and use of surfactant additives.

Participants, who should include technical professionals at coating and adhesive formulators and manufacturers, can expect to learn about the principles of surface chemistry and wetting and how the use of surfactant additives can prevent product difficulties and defects in the final material.

Dr. Charles Hegedus has worked in the Performance Materials Division at Air Products and Chemicals in Allentown, PA since 1993.  As a Research Material Scientist, he is responsible for research and applications development of specialty additives and polymers for coatings and other applications.  Prior to joining Air Products, Hegedus was employed for 17 years at the Naval Air Development Center where he was Technical Leader of the Protective Coatings Group.

The one-hour webinar format is particularly time- and cost-efficient.  Attendees can attend from their offices or labs. The registration fee is per location, not per person. Cost is $99 per site for TRFA members, and $199 per site for non-members.  Attendees at previous TRFA webinars have enthusiastically endorsed the format and content of the presentations.

ASK TRFA” Delivers the Answers

Glen Ellyn, IL—The website of the Thermoset Resin Formulators Association (TRFA) continues to invite the industry to “Ask TRFA” technical, logistics and management questions related to the thermoset resin industry.

Questions have ranged from such straightforward technical topics as “What is the definition of a structural adhesive?” to “What are the commonly used VOC exempt solvents (by EPA Method 24) in epoxies and urethanes? and “Where can I find information regarding compatibility between Thermoset and Thermo plastics used in the manufacturing of finished components?”

“Ask TRFA” is one of a handful of initiatives the association has launched to better serve its growing membership as well as the larger thermoset resin industry. TRFA is the only organization dedicated to serving the needs and interests of all thermoset formulators and has a broader focus than just epoxy.

Questions are submitted via the website.  After a review by legal counsel, questions are forwarded to the appropriate committee chairman for the committee to answer. Answers to general technical questions that do not involve confidential information or trade secrets will be posted on the website. Check back in four to six weeks to see the answer to your question. The “Ask TRFA” webpage contains only the most current questions and answers from “Ask TRFA.” Older questions and answers are a valuable resource available to TRFA members on the members-only website.

In addition to “Ask TRFA,” the association has compiled a substantial library of Technical Presentations, all of them available free-of-charge to association members via a members-only website, and to other interested individuals within the industry for purchase. An important list of more than 160 regulatory acronyms is also available on the public website. TRFA’s Regulatory Committee publishes Fact Sheets covering regulations that have been passed by governments and Issue Alerts, covering new issues, trends, etc., that are not yet regulations. These are available on the members-only website.

TRFA is comprised of thermoset formulators and fabricators, raw material suppliers, distributors, equipment manufacturers, manufacturer sales representatives of materials or equipment, importers of raw materials or processing or other equipment, consulting firms and academic institutions serving industries which include adhesives, coatings, civil engineering applications, electrical laminates, composites, tooling, castings and moldings. The continuing reduction of volatile organic compounds in coatings and adhesives has led to the related advancement of waterborne technology. Waterborne coatings and adhesives have inherently higher surface tension than solvent-borne counterparts and, thus, require surfactant wetting agents to help wetting, flow and leveling. These waterborne products have a tendency to foam during manufacturing, mixing and application processes. Foam can be stabilized by surfactants. Foam can reduce material processing and production, as well as cause problems during the application and service life of the finished material. Performance of defoamers is highly influenced by many factors and defoamer selection can be difficult.

Dr. Charles Hegedus has worked in the Performance Materials Division at Air Products and Chemicals in Allentown, Penn., since 1993. As a Research Material Scientist, he is responsible for research and applications development of specialty additives and polymers for coatings and other applications. Prior to joining Air Products, Hegedus was employed for 17 years at the Naval Air Development Center where he was Technical Leader of the Protective Coatings Group. Hegedus received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from Drexel University. He has published over 65 technical papers, has been granted 21 patents, and has received a number of industry awards, including the ACS Roy Tess Award, two FSCT Roon Awards and a Corrosion Publication Award, as well as the EPA Administrator’s Award for Pollution Prevention. Dr. Hegedus presented the FSCT’s Mattiello Lecture at the 2003 ICE Show. Charlie serves as a Technical Editor for JCT CoatingsTech and the Journal of Coatings Technology and research. He is a member of FSCT, SSPC and ACS.

TRFA Launches VOC Task Force

Glen Ellyn, IL – The Thermoset Resin Formulators Association (TRFA) has formed a VOC Task Force to address industry concerns over VOC requirements in California, Virginia and several northeast states and how they affect the use and distribution of the industry's products and the necessity for an EPA test more appropriate to this industry.

The Task Force is working under the guidance of Charlie Bartish, Air Products & Chemicals, TRFA’s regulatory affairs representative. Task Force members include Derek Kincaid of Huntsman, Charlie Zarnitz of CVC Specialty Chemicals and Tom Geriak of Garland Flooring.

TRFA has established a roster of active, market-focused committees designed to meet the needs of a broad range of thermoset technologies, including non-epoxies. They are Adhesives and Sealants; Coatings, Civil Engineering and Flooring; Composites and Tooling; and Potting, Encapsulation and Electrical. A Non-Epoxy Committee was launched in 2005. Membership in the association has grown increasingly valuable as the benefits stack up. One of the most beneficial aspects of association membership is the voice and authority it gives to a regulatory issue such as VOC requirements.

In addition to annual meetings and industry-specific programming, TRFA members benefit from access to Formulator and Supplier Market Trend Information, additional Internet visibility for member companies with links from the TRFA member list to member websites, quarterly newsletters, a Members-Only section on the TRFA website with access to a member address book, a list of Testing Standards for TRFA, minutes, technical presentations and other TRFA-specific information, important and timely regulatory updates affecting material suppliers and formulators, and the opportunity to deepen established industry and professional relationships and develop new ones with industry participants who can provide information on issues of common concern.

TRFA encourages the participation of interested companies and their application for membership. Prospective members include thermoset formulators, raw material suppliers, equipment manufacturers, consulting firms and academic institutions serving industries which include adhesives, coatings, civil engineering applications, electrical laminates, composites, tooling, castings and moldings. TRFA:  “We’re Much More Than Epoxies!”

Glen Ellyn, IL – “We’re much more than epoxies!” identifies the broader range of industry interests addressed by the formation of the Thermoset Resin Formulators Association (TRFA) in 2003.   TRFA has also launched a new, Non-Epoxy Committee to meet the needs of formulators practicing thermoset technologies other than epoxies.

Established in response to input from both current and potential members, the charter of the committee is to identify how TRFA can implement its broader focus, and support the efforts of formulators of a variety of thermoset chemistries. The Non-Epoxy Committee offers another opportunity for TRFA participants to grow their marketplace. TRFA is the only organization dedicated to serving the needs and interests of all thermoset formulators and has a broader focus than just epoxy.  In fact, the association has posted a number of photos of non-epoxy thermoset resin applications on its website, www.trfa.org.

Other chemistries that TRFA represents include polyester and vinyl esther composites, urethane, silicone, acrylic and phenolics. Steve Nolet of TPI Composites is already scheduled to present a non-epoxy Technical Paper at the 2006 Annual Meeting, September 10 – 12 at the Hyatt Regency Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  The committee is actively soliciting additional papers.

TRFA’s Non-Epoxy Committee is chaired by Melanie Bisaccio, Cognis Corporation. Participating on this new committee are Jim Steever, Rebus Inc.; Darrel Bryant, Material Apps LLC; Jason Tuerack, Broadview Technology; Marc-Antoine Pierre-Louis, Sealrez Inc.; Steve Nolet, TPI Composites; Al DeCato, Henkel Loctite; and Chris Andreola, Cabot Corporation.

TRFA membership continues to grow increasingly valuable as the benefits stack up, and none of them is as valuable as the insight gained by members who invest the time in their business and industry by joining a committee.

TRFA Offers Trial Memberships

Glen Ellyn, IL – The Thermoset Resin Formulators Association (TRFA) Board of Directors has announced the availability of a reduced-cost "trial" membership in the association for the rest of 2005. Companies choosing to join TRFA now pay only 25% of their annual membership dues for the rest of 2005.

TRFA’s Board of Directors believes the trial membership will give company representatives a chance to attend the 2005 Annual Meeting in New Orleans at the member rate and experience firsthand the value of membership in the only association of  thermoset formulators, raw material suppliers, equipment manufacturers, consulting firms and academic institutions serving industries which include adhesives, coatings, civil engineering applications, electrical laminates, composites, tooling, castings and moldings. The board believes that, once “sampled,” industry leaders will see the many benefits of TRFA membership and choose to maintain that industry relationship.

Members receive far more than they invest

The benefits of TRFA membership continue to grow. They include participation in Market-Focused Committees helping members target the marketplace in which their company has the greatest interest, the Formulator Market Trend Survey, the Supplier Market Trend survey, the annual industry forum, shared technology in a growing body of technical paper presentations, an industry-specific marketplace at the annual Table Top Showcase, and money-saving members-only programs like Solveras Payment Systems which provides members with the latest credit card processing technology.

However, members say the most valuable membership benefit is peer-shared information. Many members say the exceptional networking opportunities of the Market-Focused Committees and the Annual Meetings make TRFA membership essential to business for them and their company. The knowledge base of peer-shared information among TRFA members is key to the profitability of member companies and the association’s most important membership benefit.

In addition, the Supplier Showcase held in conjunction with the TRFA Annual Meeting gives attendees the opportunity to meet face-to-face on a level playing field. The industry offers no other comparable opportunity!

TRFA Announces Membership Drive

Glen Ellyn, IL – The Thermoset Resin Formulators Association (TRFA) has announced a new member drive that includes real savings on annual dues and the opportunity for free registration at the association’s 2005 Annual Meeting November 13-15 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Traditionally TRFA Membership benefits include participation in supplier and formulator Market Trend Surveys to be issued later this year and made available only to TRFA members. In addition to the newly introduced surveys, members also enjoy a Members-Only section on the TRFA website with access to a member address book, a list of Testing Standards for TRFA, minutes and other TRFA-specific information, along with the benefit of additional website exposure through links from the TRFA public homepage at www.trfa.org, quarterly newsletters and regulatory updated as necessary.

In addition to these membership benefits, new members joining this spring have been offered a remarkable, one-time-only financial incentive. Right now new members are offered 9 months of membership for the cost of 6 months (through 2005), as well as one complimentary registration for the 2005 Annual Meeting.

Nearly all TRFA members participate in at least one of the association’s Market-Focused Committees, which include Coatings, Civil Engineering and Flooring, Adhesives and Sealants, Composites and Tooling, and Potting, Encapsulation and Electrical. The association's Market-Focused Committees were designed by TRFA's Strategic Plan to identify and meet the specific needs of their particular market segments. They support the TRFA mission, to "serve the needs of thermoset resin formulators and suppliers and help them achieve their goals by providing a forum for sharing and interaction.”  TRFA’s Regulatory Affairs Committee was established to meet its objective to "Monitor, report on, and influence as necessary, pertinent regulation and legislation affecting our members.

Most important membership benefit is peer-shared information

Many members say the exceptional networking opportunities of the Market-Focused Committees and the Annual Meetings make TRFA membership essential to business for them and their company. The knowledge base of peer-shared information among TRFA members is key to the profitability of member companies and the association’s most important membership benefit.

Annual Meetings include the presentation of Technical Papers

TRFA membership is targeted to raw material suppliers, thermoset formulators, equipment manufacturers, consulting firms and academic institutions serving industries which include adhesives, coatings, civil engineering applications, electrical laminates, composites, tooling, castings and moldings.
